A different mission from the one originally planned
LINK was built to meet, capture and raise the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. On August 19, NASA and Katalyst Space said attitude-control problems meant the capture and boost would not go ahead. The remaining work became a demonstration of technology relevant to future servicing missions.
NASA's September 4 update reports that the team raised LINK's orbit, adjusted its alignment with Swift, deployed all three robotic arms and fired all three electric thrusters together. LINK came within roughly 12–15 kilometres of the observatory. It will not make a closer approach during its remaining operations.
Getting nearby is not the same as docking
These are useful distinctions in a field where the word rendezvous can suggest more than has happened. Reaching a neighbouring orbit, controlling a close approach and physically capturing another spacecraft are different milestones. This update does not demonstrate a completed capture or an extension of Swift's orbital lifetime.
Katalyst estimated another two to three weeks before LINK deorbits, according to NASA's September 4 account. That is an operational estimate, not a guaranteed re-entry date. The company's own spacecraft photographs document parts of the tests; they do not change the mission's revised objective.
Swift has resumed part of its science work
NASA separately reported August 28 that Swift's ultraviolet/optical and X-ray telescopes had restarted on August 26. Its third instrument, the Burst Alert Telescope, had not yet resumed data collection in that update. Atmospheric drag remains a problem for the observatory, which has no propulsion system to counter it.
The outcome is therefore mixed: some observing has resumed, and LINK can return engineering lessons, but the planned orbital rescue has not happened. Future servicing proposals will need to show how those lessons improve reliability. A valuable experiment and a successful rescue are not interchangeable claims.
