A cavity carved into a stellar nursery
N44 lies in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy roughly 160,000 light-years from Earth. Its most obvious feature is a huge central void surrounded by a shell of gas and dust. ESA/Hubble describes the cavity as a superbubble created by the winds and supernova explosions of massive stars in the central cluster.
The survey goes far beyond the picture
The observing programme catalogued nearly half a million stars in and in front of the cluster. Almost 30,000 were identified as pre-main-sequence stars — young objects that have not yet begun stable hydrogen fusion in their cores. Hubble's resolution helps separate faint targets inside the crowded field.
New stars are forming along the shell
Gas expelled from the centre accumulated around the superbubble. Compression inside that shell is associated with new star formation, making N44 useful for tracing the interval between collapsing cold clouds and the onset of nuclear fusion.
What the image can and cannot show
The hero is a processed scientific observation assembled from Hubble filters. It accurately records the observed field, but its colours and contrast are designed to reveal structure. The photograph is evidence of the nebula's appearance in those data, not a complete measurement of every star's age or mass.
