What the display actually is
The P80 Ultra's listed display is 6.83 inches with a 1.5K resolution. TCL pairs it with NXTPAPER features and a dedicated key for switching reading modes, including Paper Mode and Max Ink Mode. The underlying screen is AMOLED: a paper-like presentation is not the same thing as an e-paper panel.
That last distinction is worth keeping in mind. Judge the result by the experience you want, not by the vocabulary on the box. A reader who spends an hour with an article has a different priority from someone checking messages outdoors or editing photographs. One quick look under shop lighting cannot answer all three.
The test we would actually run
Our first comparison would use the same long article, text size and room lighting on this phone and a conventional alternative. We would check reflections, text clarity, scrolling, minimum comfortable brightness and how easily the chosen reading mode can be exited. We would repeat the exercise in daylight instead of extrapolating from a demonstration.
These are proposed tests, not results. We have not established a comfort benefit, a battery-life advantage or a reason for an existing e-reader owner to replace that device. In particular, we are not treating the manufacturer's eye-comfort language as a medical finding.
Do not let the memory headline mislead you
TCL lists a 50MP 3x periscope telephoto camera, up to 512GB storage and 8GB RAM with a separately described 16GB RAM-expansion feature. The latter must not be presented as 24GB of physical RAM. Those are manufacturer specifications, not our measurements of camera quality or multitasking.
For a useful buying comparison, keep physical memory, storage and any expansion feature in separate rows. Apply the same discipline to the camera: ask for ordinary indoor photographs and moving subjects, not only a resolution number. An unusual display should earn attention without distracting from the rest of the phone.
Our take: investigate the screen before the spec sheet wins
We would put this on the try-in-person list for people who read extensively on their phones. Bring your own reading app, increase the text to your preferred size and spend more than a minute with it. If the experience is not meaningfully better for you, the headline feature has not earned a premium.
Price, software support and a suitable return policy still belong in the decision. We are not publishing an unverified local price or calling the P80 Ultra the best reading phone. The interesting question is narrower and more useful: does this particular display make your daily reading noticeably more pleasant?
