Two routes to the same wall of colour
Signify lists Philips Hue Play Screen Sync from €119.99 and the Play HDMI sync box 4K from €149.99, available from September 3 with market variation. Screen Sync observes the television through a fisheye lens, covering built-in apps as well as external sources; the HDMI box targets HDMI-fed viewing setups.
Before choosing, trace one ordinary evening. Do you open a streaming app on the television, switch to a console, or use an external streaming player for everything? Write down the route for each. It is a better starting point than assuming every synchronisation product sees every programme you watch.
The box price is not the system price
The announcement also describes bridge-free Bluetooth synchronisation with one compatible Hue Play gradient TV strip. Adding a Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro allows a setup with up to ten lights. The quoted controller prices should not be mistaken for complete room-lighting kits.
Make a complete shopping list before comparing offers: controller, compatible lighting, the right strip size, any bridge you need and the connections already occupied behind the television. Compare equivalent finished setups. Saving on one component is not useful if it leaves an important source outside the experience.
What a showroom cannot settle
For a camera-based option, our test plan would include daylight, lamps reflected in the screen, subtitles, dark films and abrupt scene changes. For an HDMI-based option, we would check every source and display mode we actually use, plus switching and standby behaviour. None of those results can be inferred from a promotional video.
There is also an everyday question: how quickly can everyone in the household switch the effect off? Lighting that is enjoyable for a game may be distracting during a quiet film. The best setup should remain easy to control when the novelty wears off.
Keep future software out of today's verdict
Signify separately schedules Custom AI Behaviors for early October on supported Bridge Pro setups and Sonos integration for November. Back-up & Restore remains in development without a firm release date in the announcement. These features are not all available now.
Our conclusion is to buy for the experience the hardware can deliver today, with the sources and lights you already own. Treat a future update as a possible bonus, not the missing part of the purchase. We will reserve a performance verdict until testing; for now, connection compatibility and total cost are the useful comparisons.
