More than 1,600 circuits must be checked

The LHC's superconducting magnets are powered through more than 1,600 electrical circuits distributed around the accelerator's 27-kilometre ring. Major shutdowns create both an opportunity and a requirement to inspect that network before the machine is energised again.

Testing follows the temperature cycle

CERN describes three phases. Sectors are first tested cold, monitored through warm-up and tested again at room temperature. After shutdown interventions, each sector will be checked before, during and after cool-down so faults can be found before hardware commissioning.

The team works alongside major LS3 interventions

The ElQA group is supporting replacement of four magnets, repair of 11 cold bypass diodes and installation of new High-Luminosity LHC magnets around the ATLAS and CMS experiments. Each intervention changes what must be verified before the circuits can return to service.

Readiness work is not a restart date

The September 3 update says the circuits will move to hardware commissioning after the final checks. It does not claim that all tests have passed or announce when beams will return, so the work should be read as a documented readiness programme rather than a completed milestone.
